Venue: Balatonfüredi Yacht Club, Hungary
Balatonfüredi Yacht Club is one of Hungary's leading racing clubs, regularly organising major national and international championships on Lake Balaton. The marina offers protected berthing, modern facilities, and quick access to the open race area, which is free from commercial traffic and dedicated to recreational sailing.
The club is located in the historic town of Balatonfüred on the northern shore, a popular sailing and holiday destination with plenty of accommodation, restaurants, and shoreside activities for sailors and families.
Lake Balaton and May sailing conditions
Lake Balaton is a large, elongated freshwater lake offering an eight-mile–long championship race area between the north shore (Balatonfüred–Als¾örs) and the south shore (Balatonföldvár–Si¾fok). Average depths on the race course are around 2–5 metres, with no commercial shipping and minimal obstructions, giving race officers the freedom to set fair and open courses.
There is no single prevailing wind direction on Lake Balaton, which rewards teams that can read shifts and pressure with precision. In May, competitors can expect a mixture of light to medium breezes and typical Central European spring conditions, creating a varied and tactical championship where consistency will be key.
The Soling World Championship experience
The Soling remains one of sailing's classic keelboats, with a World Championship that continues to attract highly experienced and enthusiastic international teams. Racing is known for being fiercely competitive on the water, while the shore-side atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a strong culture of sharing knowledge between former Olympians, world champions, and newer teams.
With the 2026 Worlds coming to Lake Balaton, the event offers a rare opportunity to combine top-level Soling racing with the hospitality, culture, and scenery of Hungary's best-known sailing region. Teams are encouraged to secure their entry early and start planning logistics, training, and family holidays around the May 10–16 championship dates.
Contact and further information
For general questions about the 2026 Soling World Championship, competitors are invited to contact Sándor Varjas (HUN 1) or Christoph Wossala (HUN 11), who are supporting the organisation and international liaison for the event. For information about available charter and rental boats, teams should contact Christoph Wossala as the primary point of contact for boat availability and practical arrangements.
