A great day with a wind that arrived from 190 degrees exactly at 11:46 in the morning and made the Soling sailors enjoy the best sailing day you could ever expect, hiking conditions all the way but enough not to need the backstay. Full power, full speed the drag racing sometimes outplayed but smart moves and temporary shifts to the right to the left, which made the locals show their good knowledge.
At the first race, the one with the lightest wind, HUN 1 (Varjas, Vezer & Meretei) smoked the fleet, and again proved the race committee wrong about which classes are faster, as we sailed with H22 in our course, even a nice looking and modern boat, planning style with gennaker, probably fast but never to the final destination and starting 5 min ahead, the first Solings managed to catch them and finish ahead. The second at the race was legend CAN 225 (Hall, Farbowski & Muller) that with a great jibe set overtook USA 853 (Collins, Sante & Muller).
The second race again a with great conditions at this point CAN 225 in the lead just ahead HUN 1 followed by USA 853, for some unconventional thinking, USA 853 decide to tryout the right side, it was never favored, mainly because they though the lift was too high on the exit of the first downwind, the leading boat CAN 225 kept their lead but USA 853 gained too much rounding the weather mark ahead HUN 1 and in good hoist got the inside lane with CAN 225 just two or three boat lengths ahead… The whole dowind was only gain to end overlapped at the downwind mark rounding ahead and winning the race followed by CAN 225 and HUN 1 which at this point were the overall winners of the Bellano Trophy and went home to pack the boat to drive 20km to Mandello del Lario where next week starts the European Championship.
The third and last race of the program again started with great conditions SLO 1. (Antoncic, Stralh & Strahovnik ) took the left and believed until the end, USA 853 didn't go all the way, but the surprise was the locals ITA 238 (Lombardo, Ferrera & Zwad) and ITA 252 (Amicis, Amicis & Negri) that came from the right side of the course to round just ahead USA 853 at the downwind USA 853 passed ITA 238 but not ITA 252 who rounded second behind SLO 1. USA 853 believed on the left and together with ITA 238 went all the way, despite missing a hiking person on USA 853 that was dealing with a spinnaker sheet under the hull due to lack of performance on the spinnaker drop, but anyway it really paid off and it was enough to round the windward mark again in third just behind ITA 238, they kept the close battle with ITA 238 until the end, they rounded overlapped on the outside at the downwind mark, USA 853 kept the spinnaker up and sailed faster, but was not enough to pass, missing about 20 cm at the finish line. SLO 1 with his victory secured his second place at the podium and amazingly USA 853 climbed from the bottom in the overall results to the third place, they were also fast on the move to Mandello, dropping the mast in the water, being the last to hoist but the first boat from the fleet to leave Bellano and arrive Mandello by land while other 4 boats went sailing, and others were droping the mast and preparing for prize giving.
Tomorrow the European Championship ( www.solingeuropeans.com ) will start with inspection procedures and it will continue until next Saturday. The Bellano fleet will meet with more visiors that keep arriving during the day and night assuring that they are now the Soling center in Italy.
