The 2025 Soling Spain Championship ended its second day on the San Juan reservoir in the Madrid neighborhood of San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Top national teams, representing six different regions like — Gran Canaria, Murcia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, and Madrid— have been racing since this past Friday for the title hosted by the Real Club Náutico de Madrid.
On this second day, wind conditions were much better than the first day. Although the race committee managed to complete the scheduled three races on the opening day, today's races were held much faster thanks to a wind range in between 8 to 10 knots and building up throughout the day, the one reached 14 knots with gusts up to 20, all consistently from 270 degrees. These favorable conditions allowed three more races to be held, bringing the discard into play and causing a shake-up in the provisional standings.
The expected front-runners are delivering as predicted, and the provisional leaders remain at the top. The Madrid trio of Juan Pablo and José Manuel de Diego (RCN Madrid) and Julio Soria once again dominated on home waters sailing ESP 247. After posting scores of 1-2-1 yesterday, they pushed hard today with two race wins, finishing third in the last race of the day. With the discard in effect, dropping their worst result (that third-place finish), their boat Brujo Chico now leads with 6 points.
Close behind are Jaime Alonso-Allende and Tomás Peuvrel of RCN Madrid, along with Daniel Medina from RC Gran Canaria sailing ESP 183, in second place with 10 points just four behind the leaders. Their results today were 2-3-2, adding to yesterday's 2-1-4, keeping them firmly in contention for the title.
Provisionally in third place is another team from the host club: Sanbo ESP 146, helmed by Carlos Elosegui, with crew Joaquín G¾mez and Juan Ram¾n Jiménez (RCN Madrid), with 12 points. Elosegui's team, one of the pre-event favorites, closed the day with a race win. Their overall performance across six races includes 3-6-3-3-2-1.
Tomorrow, Sunday, May 11, marks the final day of competition in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, with the race committee planning to hold three more races.
