The upcoming weekends the Soling racing calendar will start to be busy, great regattas not only in Europe but also in North America will start moving sailors around, boat preparation, trailer checks, etc.
The Soling a unique class where you can find in competitive mode boats with almost 35 years apart and also racing boats with more than 50 years old it is important to follow class rules for safety.
- making sure the water tight compartments are effective,
- shrouds replacements are done periodically (close to the salt water replace after 8 years)
- blocks and fittings are revised and lubricated
- gummies replaced and also some lines
- and lifting straps should also be replaced – VERY IMPORTANT – but not only the straps have to be verified , the keel bolts where they are attached should be reviewed in special at boats that are quite old and have been stored in salty areas and or in salty waters.
Recently an accident with keel bolt issues happened in Norway, luckily no one was hurt only material damage. The boat in question a month before the accident have been sailing the World Championship held in Hanko, Norway.
The accident led to some analysis, the involved sailors after carefully studying the situation have issued a report that is available for download below if you are interested.
