Finally, a new Soling event is online to take place on the Lake Cospuden in the south of Leipzig. From May 9th to May 11th, 2025, the Cospudener Yachtclub Markleeberg e.V. (CYCM) will host the first-ever Soling Regatta on the lake, bringing together some of the best Soling sailors from across Germany and beyond for an exciting series of races. The regatta promises to be a spectacular event for both participants and spectators, with Lake Cospuden providing a stunning view on the small but beautiful skyline of Leipzig in the background.
The CYCM, a long-established and respected Saxonian sailing club, is excited to take on the responsibility of organizing the event. Their experience in hosting various sailing events such as the Flying Dutchman German Championship or supporting championships on the neighbored Lake Zwenkau (for J/70, ILCA 6 & 7) ensures that participants can expect a professionally run regatta. "We are proud to bring the Soling community to our hometown on our training lake in the south of Leipzig after we were so warmly welcomed as a relatively new Soling team. This regatta will be a great addition to the Soling calendar, driven by the younger generation," said Timo Friedrich of the HTWK-Team GER 224 / organization team.
German Open comes to Leipzig
Exciting for the organizers, the German Soling Association has given the Cospudener Yachtclub Markleeberg e.V. the honor of hosting this year's Soling German Open. This important event marks the first time that the German Open will be held at Lake Cospuden, making it another milestone for the region's sailing scene. “We are happy that we got the opportunity to host the German Open title on the very first time and are confident it will help attract a strong entry list.”
Sailing are Lake Cospuden
Known as “Cossi”, Lake Cospuden is not only the most popular swimming lake in Leipzig but also an excellent venue for sailing. The Lake typically experiences moderate winds in May, ideal for competitive sailing. Historical wind data from previous years shows an average wind speed of 10 to 15 knots, providing optimal racing conditions for the Soling teams. With its open expanse, sailors can expect clear race courses and an exciting challenge as they navigate the courses. With a circular path of around 11 kilometers its size is comparable to Berlin's Wannsee. The water depth ranges from 2 to 44 meters, making it safe enough for Soling sailing even quite near to the shore. The high water quality with visable depths up to 10 m the dock, ensures a fantastic racing experience.
Formed after the mining of brown coal between 1963 and 1992, the artificial lake was opened to the public in 2001. Despite its relatively young age of 25 years, the lake developed into an ideal spot for water sports, especially sailing. For your family and friends spectating the event, the shores of the lake also offer numerous leisure activities, including swimming beaches, water sports facilities, and dining options.
Event Details
The regatta will feature up to 8 races across the three-day event. In addition to the fierce competition, the event is also expected to attract Soling friends and visitors from across the region, contributing to the lively atmosphere at the lake.
“We hope that the Soling Regatta at Lake Cospuden becomes a new well-known date in the German Soling season. Therefore, we used the name LEIPZIG OPEN to mark the upcoming season opening of the following years,” said Friedrich. Thanks to excellent bus and train connection to the city of Leipzig, Lake Cospuden is a easily accessible on days around the event.
