Two Races in at the 2024 North American Championship
What was not a promising day, turned out into a great racing, with two different conditions on each race, the 18-boat fleet faced a first race with light winds from North East 4 to 7 knots, some shifts of 5-10 degrees and lots of ups and downs.
Sharp CAN 230 sailed by Ross Findlater, Jim McGuiness and Gord Devries where the first to understand the wind pattern mixed with the current and rounded first and not lost the lead all the way. Local team field wizards USA 798 Andy Dize, Jon he west coast team USA 794 with Olympian Gold medallist Ed Trevelyan, Alex Yakutis and Alex Perry finishing a solid third in a rental boat, the one which won the 2023 Worlds in Milwaukee
The second race the wind got stronger reaching 10 knots, but still some soft spots, but still from North East a complete different race, now with some crew hiking and three time world Champion CAN 225 with Peter Hall , Bruce Empey and John Bailey showed their skills when the breeze comes. CAN 231 Manfred Kanter, Blair Tully and John McNeil did a great job finishing second just ahead GER 1 Roman Koch, Alex Hasenclever and Max Bergk.
USA 794 was the first down, at the second upwind losing their mast after the lower shroud broke right at the union of the swage, a general reminder to all owner that stays should be replaced always after 10 years and even earlier when storing the boat in salty mix with fresh waters.
Tomorrow two races are scheduled for 11am with some possible rain and after the event dinner planned for 1830hs, sailors not living close by should think about showering at the club.
