Soling North Americans Championship
SSA, Annapolis, October 1st to 4th, Maryland, USA

Cold and rainy day at the North Americans, 6 races completed.

IRO Taran Teague managed to achieve two races at a difficult day.
It all started with a medical incident minutes before the first warning signal, ribs from the organization approached the vessel in difficulties, paramedic attended the sailor and then the rib escorted the Soling all the way in where the SSA already had organized the ambulance, all working with perfection. The sailor was attended at the hospital and later in the day released after the studies made.

After the incident the first race started in great winds from the northeast with 7 to 8 knots, some drops of rain. The wind lasted half of the beat to a point it dropped to 2 to 5 knots with huge oscillations up to 40 degrees, then the race becamne a long race, and it was shortened at the last beat, with the curiosity that while boats were crossing the line a boat just missed to finish by thinking the race was abandoned.

The second race finally it got started after a one hour waiting with big wind rolls up and downs, different readings at the weather mark and at the race committee. It had a better wind overall compared with the first race, but the oscillations were still there and many lumps without pression were found across the course.

The first race winner was CAN 225 helmed by Peter Hall, Bruce Empey and Will Thorpe they put a lead obtained in the first moment of the regatta. They were followed by GER 1 helmed by Roman Koch sailing with Hanna Neumueller and Valentin Koch and in third came USA 688 the Hangover helmed by Keith Davis sailing with Joe Brase and Dan Hoffman a great result to the blue boat that just moved from Northern NY to Annapolis.

The young team USA 830 helmed by KJ Wolaver sailing with Isaac Merrit and Maddy Henry despite starting slow on the left at the second race worked out their way to the right to finally get the lead after passing an impressive lead the Hangover USA 688 had while rounding first the upwind. The blue boat kept sailing well and were second at the third downwind, but just basically failed to go thru the gate, not sailing the course. Leaving the immediate follower place to USA 833 helmed by John McGrane sailing with Matt White and John Kish, the third place came to GER 1 who had a great day today, probably the best average in pts for the day.

The racing had other particularities, like spiderman being in the water climbing the mast on USA 824 helmed by David Crysdale sailing with Bill Bresser and JP Shipley to recover a toping lift(?)

Overall results also had some changes, where the BRA 73 helmed by Kadu Bergenthal sailing with Frederico Sidou and Edgar Oppitz without sailing particularly well climbed into second place overall ahead GER 1

Maddy Henry one of the young shots at the event sailing on USA 830 had the time to explain her approach to the Soling, and how actions like the half entry fee at the major events is a big help and good attraction to have the youth, and when asked about the boat itself, she was thrilled with the one, in which droop hiking was actually some sort of comfortable, or like how the sail controls are very similar to dinghies and that sailing One Design is so much fun.

When it was time for Dan Hoffman sailing on USA 688 to speak about the boat all good memories came to him as he used to sail the ones time ago at the great lakes used to sail the ones, now in Annapolis joining this regatta he is eager to continue what he started at the fresh water.

The North American Championship will continue this Sunday with two more races scheduled, but again we go to an early start at 1000am.
