SSA's Fall Bowl opened this year with Thursday's “fun race” - variation on the famous ICE BOWL format - a tradition for over 60 years of New Years Days' racing on the Severn River in Annapolis. Competitors start just north of the Naval Academy Bridge, go up the Severn River to a bouy mark in the middle of Round Bay, go left and round St. Helena Island — in whatever direction they choose.

They started at 11:40am. At 12:50pm, boats were rounding St. Helena Island with USA 857 (Karin Olsen Campia, Ed Travelyan, and Alex Yakutis) having led the way with a spinnaker reach up the river and then choosing to go counter-clockwise around the island; BUT USA 845 (Dave Baum, Brad Lennie and Brian Lennie ) and USA 831 (Will Turner, LeAnn Myhre, Bob Daniels) both decided to go clockwise — Dave Staying wide and hoping for a better breeze, and Will cutting close to the island's lee edge hoping the breeze will squeak him through on a shorter course. Stay tuned and learn who comes out the other end of the tunnel in the lead. If the leading boat is ahead by more than 10 lengths, she'll have to do an extra mark rounding before leaving the turning mark and heading back down the river to the finish where they started.
