Busy weekend at the Soling Class – CAN, GBR & BRA

After the start at the Canadian Championship in Montreal

With three national events in three different continents, this past weekend had an unusual activity at the Soling Class.
In Montreal the Canadian Championship was held at the Royal Saint Laurence Yacht Club, at Fort William, Scotland the British Nationals took place and in Porto Alegre, Brazil the Brazilian Championship.

In Canada the weather was good, the wind on Saturday started with a 8 to 10 knots, four races were held and in the last ones the wind increased to 16 to 18 knots. On Sunday it started with 15 to 18 knots. A fleet with 8 entries, and a young team from the RStLYC taking part for the first time in a Soling.

In Fort William the winds were light, lucky 5 races were held on Saturday because on Sunday despite the morning attempt and also a try after lunch time, there were a no go for the day, once more the young teams from Ireland marked their presence the second time in the year both fleets crossed their paths, the first was at the Irish Championship late June.

Brazil, a completely different hemisphere, wintertime still on, gray days the super trained Brazilian fleet had their Brazilian Championship with perfect sailing conditions during the weekend, on Saturday 12 to 15 knots of wind with nice shifts and on Sunday a steady 10 to 13 knots from the East (sea breeze), On Saturday after races the fleet had their Barbecue gathering and welcomed a few newcomers in the class.

CAN 225 helmed by Peter Hall sailing with William Hall and Antoine Paccarar once more showed the strength and retained the title from 2025. They were followed close by CAN 230 helmed by Ross Findlater sailing with Gord Devries and John McNeil and in third came the team from Halifax CAN 236 helmed by Bill Haliburton sailing with Terry Booth and Nick White, they finished just a point ahead the team from Port Stanley CAN 233 helmed by Tom Freeman sailing with Donker and Dave Veldstra , team who lost its mast on the last race of the day.

In Fort William GBR 155 helmed by Gary Richardson sailing with Karl Sloane and Andrew Ryan managed to steel the trophy from the veteran GBR 161 helmed by Hamish Loudon sailing with Victoria Kimber and Vicent Dean, in third came GBR 156 helmed by Peter Watt sailing with Ruaridh Mills and Marie Meldrum in fourth the young Irish team IRL 3 helmed by Daniel Thompson sailing with Harry Thompson and Rachel Deasy.

At the Southern Hemisphere BRA 73 team ICO helmed by Kadu Bergenthal sailing with Frederico Sidou and Edgar Oppitz had an impressive record of bullets after their initial second place at the first race, managing to skip the last race on Sunday, and attend the prize giving freshened, we should mention that the team is on their preparation to attend the 2027 Worlds in Texas, and for that they will be sailing the 2026 North American Championship next October in Annapolis and testing the boat they pretend to use in the Oil capital.

In second came team equilibrium BRA 78 helmed by Nelson Ilha sailing with Manfredo Floricke and Eduardo Carneiro, they won the first bullet but could not keep up alterning seconds and thirds over the races, we should mention that these two teams have been placing top 10 finishes at almost all world championships in the last decade.
In third came BRA 86 helmed by Henrique Ilha sailing with Eduardo Cavalli and Caetano dos Anjos. The classic trophy went to BRA 28 helmed by Gustavo Neyer sailing with Felipe Kulpa and Frederico Nunenkamp.

While the class Europeans approaches the European fleet will have two events before to practice, first at Leipzig and then the Norwegian Championship just before the last main event in Europe. And early in October the North American Championship will take place at Annapolis.
